``In 1998 I was asked to take over the artistic directorship of The Vail Valley
Music Festival, ten years after it had been founded by violinist Ida
Kavafian and current Executive Director, John Giovando. With an already
overloaded schedule, I wondered if it was wise to accept. The complicated
puzzle of putting together a prestigious summer music festival involves year
round work of planning programs, inviting artists, arranging details, and
negotiating with musicians and managers. Despite misgivings, I accepted the
challenge and I have never been happier with a decision. Working with my
associate artistic director, Lynne Mazza, executive director, John Giovando,
and a remarkable staff, I am now part of a dedicated team that puts together
a world class summer music festival, with superb international artists and
programs that are both ambitious and entertaining.´´
``In the spectacular setting
of the Rocky Mountains, the festival offers some fifty concerts during the
six weeks between the end of June through the first week of August. Three of
America´s finest orchestras (the Dallas Symphony, the Colorado Symphony and
the Rochester Philharmonic) each come for a residency in Vail, performing,
along with international soloists, in the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater.
Chamber music has always been the heart of the festival, and intimate
concerts with sensational players are presented in some of the glorious homes
in the Vail Valley as well as at the beautiful and acoustically superb Vilar
Center for the Arts. As I enter my fourth summer as the artistic director
(and performer) I am proud to say that the Vail Valley Music Festival is one
of America´s most popular and prestigious summer festivals. Visit our
website
and then come on out to the Rockies where an abundance of nature and harmony
waits for you this summer!´´
